No, celiac disease is not the same as wheat allergy.

The world of celiac disease is a delicate and complex world, often not easy and immediate understanding. Among the questions that many ask, there is also this: is wheat allergy the same thing as celiac disease? The Italian Celiac Association tried to clarify the issue by answering on its website:

The answer to the question celiac disease equals wheat allergy is "No, the allergy to wheat proteins (wheat) is a pathological condition completely different from celiac disease, involves different immune mechanisms, is triggered by a complex of wheat molecules other than gluten, and involves response times and reactions very different from those of celiac disease, including skin rash and the fearful anaphylactic shock" .

Furthermore, while in celiac disease the only route of exposure to gluten capable of activating the disease is the intestinal one, “the trigger routes of wheat (wheat) allergy – continues theAiC – are different and also include the respiratory system, skin and mucous membranes”.
