World Celiac Day and Week: information and awareness-raising
The16 May World Celiac Day is celebrated all over the world, a day with important social and symbolic value. According to scientific literature data, celiac disease affects approximately 1% of the general population globally. In Italy, therefore, celiacs should be around600,000.
As of 12/31/2018 the confirmed (diagnosed) cases were just over 214,000. In our country, in fact, there are less than 400,000 undiagnosed celiacs who, by using gluten daily, would present the disorders (symptoms) of the disease and would risk experiencing complications. Not just World Day, however, because in Italy every year the National Celiac Disease Week also takes place, an initiative of the Italian Celiac Association which since 1979 has been committed to changing the lives of celiac people and their families for the better.
“The week, which takes place every year in the month of May on International Celiac Day (16 May), was born in 2015.
Nine days, from 14 to 22 May, to provide correct information, raising public and media awareness of a pathology that affects around 600,000 people in Italy, of which almost 400,000 are not yet diagnosed. An important moment to shine the spotlight on false myths and countless fake news that often contribute to generating bad information, poor knowledge of celiac disease and consequently of the needs and rights of patients.
On the site it is possible to identify all the events organized by the 20AIC and by the National Federation, both on the territory and in digital contexts”.
