The Ministry of Health has published the 2020 edition of the Report to Parliament on Celiac Disease, the reference document on celiac disease in Italy. The data collected as of 12/31/2020 tell us that there are a total of 233,147 people with celiac disease and almost 400,000 are still waiting for a diagnosis since celiac disease affects 1% of the population. There are more than twice as many women with celiac disease as men.
You can read it on https://www.celiachia.it/pubblicata-la-relazione-al-parlamento-sulla-celiachia/, the website of the The Italian Celiac Association was founded in 1979 and today is the spokesperson for patients and their requests in all the most important institutional contexts. The article then continues: “The emergency generated by Covid-19 has had important repercussions on access to diagnosis and treatment in all healthcare settings: diagnoses of celiac disease are also affected by this phenomenon and only grow by 7729 units compared to the previous year.
In 2019, 11,000 new patients were diagnosed. The available data also tells us that the National Health System spent 209.6 million on the purchase of gluten-free products with an average per capita contribution of around 1000 Euros. In the preface to the document, the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza underlines an objective for which AIC has also been committed for years: "the purchase of gluten-free products outside the region of residence or the medical home of the celiac patient and the usability of the good in allsales channels”.
